The term “Third World,” while common, is problematic in that it connotes a part of the world that has fallen behind, or lost the race to development altogether, rather than highlighting the exploitation and over-development of the “First World.” The term “Fourth World” is used to describe the increasing numbers of very poor who live in the world's wealthy countries.
