1. Richard Jeffrey showed how to do what Lewis thought couldn't be done by showing how evidence that is less than certain can be used to readjust probability assignments. Such readjustments can make it reasonable to be confident, though not maximally certain, that a claim is true on the basis of evidence whose probability is less than 1 (Jeffrey 1983, 164–180).
